The Many Benefits of Midwives

Pregnancy, childbirth, and early newborn care can be a dizzying time, to say the least. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone by your side every step of the way? That someone can be found in a midwife.

Whether you’re embarking on your first pregnancy or you’ve been down this exciting road before, getting the right support during this time is paramount. And we’re not just talking about prenatal care, but care that follows you through your pregnancy, the birth of your child, and the early days of catering to your newborn’s (and your) needs.

At Progressive Women’s Healthcare, we provide this support through our top-notch obstetric and midwife care. At the heart of our team of providers are certified nurse midwives who help women navigate every step of pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond.

On average, there are about 3.6 million births each year in the United States, and midwives attend about 12% of these births. In this blog, we take a look at a few reasons why midwifery is so popular and beneficial.

Midwives offer targeted care

We have three certified midwives on staff, and each of these providers has undergone extensive training in:

  • Prenatal care
  • High-risk pregnancies
  • Childbirth
  • Early newborn care
  • Breastfeeding and lactation
  • Postpartum care

Our midwives are specifically trained in helping women through family building, from start to finish. But we’re trained in a way that focuses less on the clinical side and more on ensuring a relaxed, happy, and healthy journey through this natural process.

Midwives work with you on your birth plan

From the moment you find out you’re pregnant, our midwives prove invaluable. Once we confirm your pregnancy and perform your first prenatal checkup, we get to work on helping you with your birth plan. This plan includes how you see delivery going and what you expect afterward.

If you want a home birth, we can help you realize this dream. Maybe you want a more natural childbirth without medications. Or perhaps you want a hospital setting and ample pain relief.

Each woman’s birth plan is her own, and our role is to help facilitate the plan and keep everything on track. Should we need to make some adjustments, we work with you to make sure that your needs and goals are met.

Better health for baby and mother through midwife care

Because helping women navigate pregnancy is our area of expertise, we’re not surprised that study after study confirms the health benefits — for both baby and mother — of having a midwife on your team.

In fact, a review of 15 different trials that included nearly 18,000 women concluded: “Midwifery-led care models save infants’ lives, prevent preterm birth, reduce the need for interventions, and improve women’s experiences and clinical outcomes.”

Midwives go beyond pregnancy care

The midwives at our practice are certified nurse midwives, which means they can offer care outside of your pregnancy, such as:

Whatever your reproductive health needs, we have you covered.
